Prerequisites: You must have completed a Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting course before attending this course.

This course is ideal for those wishing to achieve a LANTRA award in Chainsaw Basic Felling Techniques of small trees up to 200mm only. It will provide you with the appropriate techniques and safety guidelines to ensure that you are not only confident when using a chainsaw but also aware of relevant health and safety requirements making sure you stay protected.

  • Take down hung-up trees using hand tools
  • Branch removal – snedding and de-limbing
  • Clearing working area and work equipment checks

What will be covered?

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

  • Identify the risk assessment and emergency procedures on a worksite
  • Organise site safety and state the procedures required
  • Identify the necessary personal protective equipment required, report on its condition and
    locate the various standard marks
  • Assess the trees to be felled for hazards and risks
  • Make accurate felling cuts in the correct positions
  • Fell trees which have a diameter less than 200mm
  • Assess a leaning tree and the safest method of felling
  • Assess a hung-up tree and the safest method of takedown
  • Select and prepare equipment required for safe and effective takedown
  • Make accurate severing cuts in the correct positions
  • State techniques which must not be used for the takedown of hung-up trees
  • De-limb felled trees in a safe and methodical manner
  • Cross-cut timber accurately to required lengths
  • Handle and stack timber in a safe manner

  • Chainsaw
  • Operator’s maintenance kit and equipment
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
